It’s been a while since I posted anything… I have been a very busy bunny, but also a very lucky one! We had a great opportunity to visit our US friends in Venice. They managed a flat-swap with a Venetian couple who traveled to San Francisco. Anyway, I wanted to share a couple of interesting things with you – all of you. For example, this lovely shop where quality authentic masks are hand-made and sold. OK not to us, but the hordes of tourists. Difference is, these weren’t the poor ‘fakes’ on sale throughout the city – rather a snapshot from the past – glorious experience with opera playing in the background.

The Pride Brussels 2010

Special EVENT – A view from our friend’s balcony over one of the small squares in the gay part of Brussels, where the sounds systems compete. Gradually we noticed real characters in the crowd… The Walker, Greyboy and Pinky, so view on! This is 3-4pm… the real thing kicked off much later of course. Who are you guys – you’re a sociologist’s dream and a great advert for integration.

Emerging from the crowd, a famiilar man in pink – dramatic and energised. And our man in grey. Go for it! Now watch the looks they get from the cool (clearly ungay) dancers. A very accepting atmosphere… AND THEN I GET SPOTTED!! This is a very special moment; a real mix of gays and straight, exhibitionists and bizarre interactions. At 4mins 10s, the Walker makes his first appearance.

Same characters appear – The Walker, Grey boy, Pinky and our friendly dance group. This is also so culturally diverse – and Pinky moves in on some real cuties. He proceeds to demonstrate how a real Queen should move. Who are you all? Truly fascinating, and great dancing.

Classic… The Walker in grey finally gets movin! (this is an hour after the first video – these interactions went on for 5 hours right up til we left).

Plastic is all around us.

I feel so lucky to have worked with Tim Hetherington during our Canon Photokina project – at the time I felt he was a really special guy. No question, his work is incredible. It’s just been released on the Sundance Film Festival 2010. I definitely will try to see his and his director partner’s (Sebastian Junger) new film called: Restrepo

Winter Wonders

Winter Wonders just started yesterday here in Brussels. Today I walked around and tried to capture some first impressions. this is a remarkable ‘toy’. Very arty and surreal as everything Belgian tends to be. Viewable until the 3rd January 2010. The event takes place at the Grand Place in Brussels and around the Bourse, the Place Sainte-Catherine and the Marché aux Poissons.

Sad day for the girls

Our lively – and questionable – district was hard hit last week with the murder of a young Hungarian prostitute. A 46 year-old man was arrested, but the 19 year-old and her 4-month old kid will never understand why.

There’s a flower tribute by our back door, next to the world’s only monument to prostitutes. A sombre sight for us, but a curiosity for the hundreds of leering men who have been passing by it on their way to more fragrant attractions. Increasingly I wonder how many to these tourists would cross the line – who do more than look. How many have wives and kids, which ones view my neighborhood simply as a bit of ‘manly’ fun?
